The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate after a man was shot and killed by police in downtown Toronto on Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to a call about a missing person just before 4:00 a.m. at an apartment building on George Street in the area of Dundas and Jarvis.
The SIU says police were on the third floor when an interaction ensued with a resident leading to two officers discharging their firearms.
One man was shot as a result. He was transported to hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.
Chief James Ramer says Toronto Police are conducting a missing person investigation at the scene that is unrelated to the Tuesday shooting.
“We’ve had an officers-involved interaction and a man has been killed and the SIU has invoked their mandate so there’s very little I can say,” Ramer explained.
“What I will say is that we were investigating, trying to locate a missing person, and our officers came into contact with an individual.”
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. At this time, two subject officials and seven witness officials have been designated, the SIU says.

The province’s police watchdog is urging anyone with information to come forward and is instructing anyone who may have video evidence related to this incident to upload it through the SIU website.
The SIU invokes their mandate every time there is an incident involving police that results in serious injury, death, or sexual assault.
