Suspect charged with murder in investigation of missing man turned homicide

A man arrested for allegedly attacking police officers who had come to look for a missing man at an Etobicoke rooming house has now been charged with the 57-year-old man’s murder.

The search for Nathaniel Brettell, who was reported missing on Jan. 21, brought police to house in the area of Royal York Boulevard and Lawrence Avenue West area on Feb 1.

Officers didn’t find Brettell, but spotted blood during their probe and returned  to conduct a more thorough search.

Police said with evidence collected from the scene, it led them to determine that the investigation would now be considered a homicide rather than a missing person.

During their investigation of the rooming house, two police officers were attacked by a man. The suspect was tasered and arrested on scene.

One of the officers suffered significant slash wounds. The other officer’s injuries were more minor in nature. Both were treated at hospital and released.

Ahmed Al Farkh, 33, of Toronto was arrested at the scene and faced several charges in connection with his alleged attack on the officers.

After an investigation, Al Farkh was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Brettell on May 12.

Police are still searching for Brettell’s remains.
