Rainy forecast looms for southern Ontario through next week

For those looking forward to the upcoming long weekend, it seems likely that you’ll be greeted by days and days of rain that could put a serious dampen on festivities.

Meteorologists and weather specialists are calling a “potent system” that will track into the Great Lakes region this weekend that could bring periods of rain and thunderstorms, some of which could turn severe.

These storms could begin as early as Friday night and will last through most of Saturday with Environment Canada predicting Toronto could see as much as 10-15 millimetres of rain when it’s all said and done.

But areas north of the city, including Muskoka, Algonquin Park, and Haliburton could see severe storms develop as well; awful news for anyone hoping to get to the cottage early this year.

Cottage country 7-day forecasts:

Algonquin Park (Lake of Two Rivers):

Barrie:

Kawartha Lakes (Lindsay):

Muskoka:

Parry Sound:

“Despite a bit of a lull in the stormy pattern for the early part of the week, more widespread showers and thunderstorms return by mid-week, possibly impacting vacation plans and the Canada Day holiday,” says The Weather Network, with meteorologists cautioning for severe storms.

“Much of cottage country, Haliburton and Algonquin Park, and into western Quebec, could see as much as 80-150 mm of rain throughout the next 10 days.”

The good news is it’s still early, and Environment Canada suggests that there will still be some sunshine for people to enjoy.
