Human remains found in the City of Kawartha Lakes are confirmed to be those of a missing Whitby woman who investigators allege was killed by her son.

Durham Regional Police say a body discovered on The Glen Road Sunday evening has been identified as 58-year-old Ava Burton. The identity of a second body recovered at that scene has yet to be confirmed.

Burton is one of two women reported missing back on October 14 after officers were unable to locate them during a wellness check at an address on Scepter Place.

Joshua Burton, 30, of Whitby has since been arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the disappearance of Burton, his mother, and 85-year-old Tatilda Noble, his grandmother.

Police have not revealed how the women died but say post-mortem results indicate obvious signs of trauma to the recovered remains.
