MUST-WATCH: Spooky stylish suspense from Edgar Wright in the Top 10!

By James Mackin

We’ve got some good spooky movies entering the MUST-WATCH Top 10 this week! But will that top spot go the latest zombie movie, a small-town creature feature, or a stylish 60s throwback? Maybe Star Trek’s latest show has a chance? You’ll just have to keep reading to find out!

Army of Thieves

Where to watch: Netflix

First up, a return to a world filled with zombies!

Army of Thieves

A safecracker does what he does best in Netflix’s Army of Thieves.

Army of Thieves is a new film that’s a prequel to a Netflix original released earlier this year called Army of the Dead. That film was centered around a Las Vegas heist during the middle of a zombie apocalypse, and this film takes on a similar vibe. Set roughly 6 years earlier, Army of Thieves focuses on Ludwig Dieter (played by Matthias Schweighöfer, who also directed this film and appeared in Resistance). Dieter is a safecracker, and this film looks at his first heist during the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. Teaming up with a crew led by Nathalie Emmanuel (from Game of Thrones and F9), they decide to rob three safes owned by the same billionaire.

You can watch this movie (and Army of the Dead) on Netflix now!

Star Trek: Prodigy

Where to watch: Crave

Next up, we’re boldly going where no teenager has gone before!

Star Trek: Prodigy is the latest animated addition to the ongoing franchise. While most Star Trek shows are about a Starfleet crew, this one is slightly different. This show is set in the Delta Quadrant, where Voyager was also set. It concerns a group of teenage aliens living on an asteroid who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship called the USS Protostar. The teenagers are played by Brett Gray (from On My Block), Ella Purnell (from Army of the Dead) and Jason Mantzoukas (from the League). Once they activate the ship, they’re joined by the ship’s Emergency Training Holographic Advisor, styled after famous Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway (played once again by Kate Mulgrew from Voyager and Orange is the New Black).

You can watch the first two episodes on Crave now, with all other episodes coming out weekly!

Antlers

Where to watch: Cinemas

Now, let’s take a look at a very scary new horror film!

Antlers stars Keri Russell (from the Americans and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as a elementary school teacher living in Oregon. One of her students in class starts drawing these scary images of a creature with antlers, and he keeps saying that this creature is coming for him. At the same time, her brother (played by Jesse Plemons from I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Judas and the Black Messiah), the local sheriff, is investigating a case of a man violently ripped in half near a mine. Together, the two start to realize this creature with antlers could be coming for them.

You can watch the film in cinemas now!

Colin in Black & White

Where to watch: Netflix

Coming up next, a miniseries biopic about a famous sports stars and activist!

Colin in Black & White

Colin Kaepernick prepares to reflect on his life in Netflix’s Colin in Black & White.

Colin in Black & White is a miniseries about Colin Kaepernick. Formerly the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, he has been working as a civil rights activists for several years now. This all started when he knelt during the national anthem of several NFL games as a form of protest against racial inequality in America, a move which polarized the nation. This new miniseries, created by Kaepernick and Ava DuVernay (the director of Selma and When They See Us), focuses on his upbringing with his parents played by Nick Offerman (from Parks and Recreation) and Mary-Louise Parker (from Weeds). The miniseries shows his rise in sports, while also showing his growing commitment to activism in the face of growing racial inequality throughout the country.

You can watch all episodes on Netflix now!

Last Night in Soho

Where to watch: Cinemas

Last, but certainly not least, is the latest from Edgar Wright!

Last Night in Soho is the first genuine horror film from Wright (the director of Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Shaun of the Dead). It’s a London-set thriller starring Thomasin McKenzie (from Jojo Rabbit and Old), Anya Taylor-Joy (from the Queen’s Gambit and the Witch) and Matt Smith (from Doctor Who and the Crown). The less said about this film the better, but its plot is a throwback to classic British horror-thrillers like Don’t Look Now and Repulsion, as well as the always colourful and horrifying giallo genre, like Suspiria and Blood and Black Lace. McKenzie plays a fashion design student living in modern-day London who finds that when she sleeps, she’s transported back in time to the 1960s in the body of Taylor-Joy’s character. And that’s when reality begins to unfold, and a bloody mystery surfaces.

You can watch this film at the cinema now, and I highly recommend you don’t spoil it for yourself!
