IKEA not selling Christmas trees in Canada due to supply shortage

Swedish meatballs but no Christmas trees.

Due to a shortage, IKEA says it will not sell Christmas trees at its Canadian stores this holiday season.

In an update posted to their website, IKEA links the unavailability to “industry-wide impacts of COVID-19 on the global supply chain,” adding that they’re experiencing significant delays for certain products both in-store and online.

“We know live trees have been a much-loved tradition for IKEA and our customers over many years, and we sincerely apologize,” IKEA said in a statement. “As you welcome friends and family over the holiday season, we will continue to offer home furnishings that help you create a better everyday life at home. Happy Holidays!”

The store is urging consumers to be patient with regards to its customer service, with the COVID-19 pandemic presenting “challenges that no one could have anticipated a few short months ago.”

“We assure you that our co-workers have been working tirelessly to fulfil online orders, increase capacities and meet your needs in new ways, all with new health and safety practices at the forefront,” IKEA wrote.

“Due to the changes in our operations during this time, we have been experiencing higher than normal contact volumes and wait times are longer than usual, but we are working hard to improve that.”

Last year, CityNews reported on a Christmas tree shortage that directly resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.
