2,400-plus COVID hospitalizations in Ontario as ICU admissions continue to rise

The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care continues to rise, a day after surpassing the 400-mark for the first time since June 2021.

There are currently 438 patients in the ICU, an increase from 412 on Sunday. The seven-day rolling average of patients in the ICU now sits at 349. Of the 438 patients, 234 are on ventilators.

The province reported 2,467 patients are being treated in hospital, up from 2,419 the day before. However, officials note not all hospitals report on weekends.

The province does not provide vaccination status data for hospital and ICU admissions on Mondays due to incomplete hospital reporting on the weekends.

On Friday, health officials said 2,472 were hospitalized, which surpassed the all-time high of 2,360 from April of last year. The province reported 2,594 hospitalizations on Saturday.

According to provincial data, there are 12 new virus-related deaths, bringing the overall death toll to 10,378.

So far, more than 91 per cent of Ontarians aged 12 and older have received one dose of a COVID vaccine, while over 88 per cent are full vaccinated. More than 4.7 million of Ontarians (32 per cent) have received their third dose.

Below is the number of new COVID-19 infections and tests in Ontario. Cases are likely much higher due to changes in testing strategy across the province. More information on these changes can be found here.

Ontario is also reporting 9,706 new COVID-19 cases but Public Health Ontario warns the number of infections is likely much higher due to the province’s testing capacity and accessibility.

There were 40,692 completed tests in the last 24-hour period for a positivity rate of 26.7 per cent. However, there is test backlog of 95,540.
