Ontario reports 36 new COVID-19 deaths, 11K since start of pandemic

Ontario is reporting 36 new COVID-19 deaths as ICU admissions remain over 600.

There are now 615 COVID-19 patients in the ICU, up from 604 a day ago and up from 569 one week ago. There are 372 people on ventilators.

Health officials say 3,861 people are currently in the hospital with the virus, up from 3,797 reported one day ago. The province says the numbers don’t represent the full extend of hospitalizations as more than 10 per cent of hospitals don’t update their numbers on the weekend.

The province saw a pandemic high of nearly 4,200 hospitalizations last Tuesday.

The 36 new virus-related deaths bring Ontario’s total COVID-19 death toll to over 11,000 since the start of the pandemic.

As of Saturday, 56.5 per cent of hospitalizations with the virus were admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 and 43.5 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have since tested positive for the virus. Among ICU patients, 81.4 per cent were with COVID-19 and 18.6 per cent tested positive in the hospital.

Unvaccinated individuals make up 8.4 per cent of Ontarians 12 and older and represent 47 per cent of ICU admissions.

As of Monday, 91.6 per cent of Ontarians 12 and older have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 88.9 per cent have received two doses. More than six million Ontarians have now received a third dose.

Below is the number of new COVID-19 infections and tests in Ontario. Cases are likely much higher due to changes in testing strategy across the province. More information on these changes can be found here.

The province is confirming 4,790 new cases but health officials warn the number of infections is much higher due to the province’s testing capacity and accessibility.

There were 20,716 tests completed in the last 24-hour period for a positivity rate of 18.4 per cent. The positivity rate has stayed below 20 per cent the past five days after hovering above that mark since Christmas day.

COVID-19 in schools

Ontario began sharing data about school absences on Monday, a week after in-person learning resumed without public reporting of classroom COVID-19 exposures.

The new info is updated on the province’s website each weekday and will list schools and school boards that have reported staff and student absences.

The province says 16 schools are currently closed due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

When schools reopened to in-person learning on Jan. 17, the province no longer required them to share information about COVID-19 cases. Instead parents will be notified when absenteeism among staff and students reaches 30 per cent, regardless of whether those absences are connected to the virus.

Dr. Kieran Moore said the province would continue to report specific virus-related data, such as virus-related admissions to hospitals for children between the ages of five to 11 and 12 to 17.
