Ontario reports 8 new COVID-19 deaths, hospitalization and ICU numbers continue to drop

Ontario is reporting eight additional deaths due to COVID-19 on Monday as hospitalizations and ICU numbers continue their downward trend.

There are 1,369 people in hospital due to the virus while the number of patients in ICU now sits at 394. Of those patients, 243 are on ventilators. However, health officials point out not all hospitals report their data on the weekend.

Fifty-three percent of those hospitalized are due to COVID-19 while 81 per cent of those in critical care are due to the virus.

Provincial health officials reported 1,765 cases new COVID-19 cases on Monday. That number is underreported following changes to the province’s testing policy.

A total of just under 10,000 tests were processed in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 13 per cent.

The province administered 18,265 COVID-19 vaccines on Sunday. Over 45 per cent of Ontarians have three doses of the vaccine, while 92.4 per cent of Ontarians 12+ have at least one dose and 90.1 per cent have two doses.

Premier Doug Ford announced Monday the province would be lifting proof-of-vaccination requirements in all settings as of March 1. The government is also moving up their latest reopening plan from Feb. 21 to Feb. 17 which includes the lifting of capacity limits at restaurants and bars and increased limits for gatherings.
