Ontario reports 46 new COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations continue to decline

Ontario is reporting 46 additional COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday.

There are 1,403 people in hospital due to the virus while the number of patients in ICU now sits at 364. Hospitalizations are down from 1,550 the previous day and from over 2,000 one week ago.

According to the Ministry of Health, 82 per cent of patients admitted to the ICU were admitted for COVID-19 and 18 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have since tested positive.

Of the new deaths, all occurred over the past 30 days and 18 occurred in the previous three days.

Provincial health officials are reporting 2,532 new cases on Wednesday. Officials warn that number is underreported following changes to the province’s testing policy.

There were 19,839 tests completed in the previous day for a test positivity rate of 10.2 per cent.

The Ford government intends to fully lift capacity limits on businesses and social gatherings on March 1. Its vaccine certificate policy — which requires that certain businesses only admit vaccinated patrons — is set to end the same day.

Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday that he was “never sold” on the proof-of-vaccination policy, but that he introduced it on the advice of the province’s chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore.

Moore has said that masks should be required in Ontario for a bit longer. The province has not yet set a date to end its mask mandate covering public spaces, but Ford indicated on Tuesday that he wants to end that policy as well, saying that people want to “get back to normal” without such rules.

Moore and Ford have both pointed to improving virus indicators such as dropping hospitalizations and intensive care admissions as the rationale behind lifting more public health rules.
