Ontario hospitalizations due to COVID hit highest mark since mid-February

Ontario is reporting the highest number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 since mid February with the virus accounting for almost half of all new admissions.

Health officials say there are 1,135 patients hospitalized due to COVID-19, an almost 30 per cent increase over the previous week and the highest total since February 19. Of those patients, 45 per cent were admitted due to the virus.

There are 166 COVID patients in ICU – 63 per cent of those in critical care are as a direct result of the virus.

There were 10 new deaths confirmed on Friday, four occurred more than a month ago and were added due to a data cleanup. The number of Ontarians who have died due to coronavirus now stands at 12,537.

The province reported 4,295 new cases of COVID-19, however, with due to restricted eligibility for PCR testing that number is underreported. The head of Ontario’s science table indicated Wednesday wastewater triangulation data shows there could be up to 100,000 new cases per day.

There were 17,565 tests processed in the last 24 hour period for a positivity rate of 19 per cent – that is the highest since Monday.

The province administered 23,530 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, including 4,895 booster shots.
