MUST-WATCH: Wizards, witches, and the multiverse

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has returned with an insane trip into the multiverse courtesy of one of cinema’s greatest superhero directors! But will it top the MUST-WATCH Top 10 when there’s a new comedy from Mike Myers, and a new Star Trek show about the USS Enterprise? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!


The Pentaverate

First up, it’s time for some Canadian comedy!

The Pentaverate

The Pentaverate is a new show starring Mike Myers (from Austin Powers, Wayne’s World and Shrek) as several people. The main character he plays is Canadian journalist Ken Scarborough. He’s lost his job, and he needs a big story in order to get it back. He decides to chase after a rumour he thinks to be real, the Pentaverate. This is a secret society of five men that’s existed since the Black Plague, each of them played by Mike Myers. Scarborough has to chase them down, and discover the truth about this small organization that’s shaped the world for centuries. This show also stars Keegan-Michael Key (from the Bubble), Lydia West (from It’s a Sin). and Ken Jeong (from Community).

The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith

Now, it’s time for some Canadian true crime.

The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith is a docuseries about of the most infamous unsolved crimes in the Greater Toronto Area. Beverly Lynn Smith was a young mother shot dead in her kitchen. It was unsolved for over three decades, until a tip implicated her neighbour from across the street, Alan Dale Smith. He was not related Beverly, and he maintains his innocence to this day. But was he really the killer, or was the truth lost to history?

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness

Next up, it’s time for a trip to the multiverse courtesy of Marvel!

Fresh off his recent multiversal adventure with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness sees the Master of the Mystic Arts (played by Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock Holmes) fighting against one of the Avengers. Wanda Maximoff (played by Elizabeth Olsen from Martha Marcy May Marlene), also known as the Scarlet Witch, is using the help of an evil book of witchcraft to travel through the multiverse in search of the children she created back in WandaVision. Doctor Strange has to team up with new hero America Chavez (played by Xochitl Gomez from the Baby-Sitters Club), who has the ability to travel through all universes. This film is also the first film in eight years by Sam Raimi (the acclaimed filmmaker who made the Evil Dead trilogy, Darkman, and the first Spider-Man trilogy), who combines his horror and superhero sensibilties.

The Staircase

Where to watch: Crave

Now, it’s time for some more true crime!

The Staircase is an HBO Max show based on the death of Kathleen Peterson (played by Toni Collette from Hereditary). Her husband, crime novelist Michael Peterson (played by Colin Firth of the King’s Speech) is accused of murdering her, but maintains her innocence. As he goes to trial and his family is split on whether or not he’s telling the truth, a French documentary crew comes to their North Carolina home to make a true crime series about them. This miniseries also stars Juliette Binoche (from High Life), Sophie Turner (from Game of Thrones), Dane DeHaan (from Chronicle), and Parker Posey (from Dazed and Confused) among many, many more people.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Lastly, it’s time for another trip into the final frontier!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount, Rebecca Romjin and Ethan Peck as Captain Christopher Pike, Number One, and Spock respectively in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is both a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, and a prequal to the original series. It stars Anson Mount (from Inhumans) as Captain Christopher Pike, an adventurous captain who was last seen temporarily taking command of the USS Discovery in that show’s second season. He’s now back where he belongs, as the captain of the iconic USS Enterprise. This show covers the years before James T. Kirk became Captain, but it does feature Spock (played by Ethan Peck (from the tv show 10 Things I Hate About You) and Uhura (played by Celia Rose Gooding from the stage version of Jagged Little Pill). With his first officer Number One (played by Rebecca Romjin from the X-Men movies), Captain Pike’s goal is to chart the stars, and to boldly go where no man has gone before.
