Toronto motorcyclist suffers critical injuries in highway crash

A 25-year-old motorcyclist is fighting for his life following a crash on Highway 401 in Ajax on Saturday.

Provincial police say the motorcyclist was travelling in the westbound lanes of the highway when he slammed into the back of an SUV that was merging onto the roadway at Westney Road.

The Toronto man was taken a trauma centre in critical condition.

Speed and dangerous driving were likely factors in the crash, according to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, who noted highway patrols have received numerous reports of motorcyclists driving dangerously on the region’s highways.

“Formula One is tomorrow in Monaco. The 401 is a highway in the GTA and we currently have motorcycles travelling at high rates of speed,” said Schmidt. “Officers just saw a group of motorcycles lane splitting at 254 km an hour.”

“This is not a race track, this is not the way to be using our highways. This kind of behaviour is obviously very dangerous, potentially life-threatening and deadly.”
