By James Mackin

Somebody from the Greater Toronto Area has made it into the MUST-WATCH Top 10! But will this new superhero top the list, or will it go to the latest dinosaur themed adventure? Perhaps a miniseries about the intersection of true crime and religion? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Ms. Marvel

Where to watch: Disney+

We’re starting off this week with a superhero from the GTA!

Ms. Marvel is the latest offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it stars newcomer Iman Vellani (who was raised in Markham) as Muslim teenager Kamala Khan. She’s an ordinary teenager living in New Jersey, and she’s obsessed with the Avengers (Captain Marvel in particular). One day she finds a bangle handed down throughout her family that gives her the power of making light constructs, essentially objects made out of hard light. She decides to put these newfound powers to good use, and become a superhero just like the people who inspire her daily. This show also stars Aramis Knight (from Ender’s Game), Matt Lintz (from the Walking Dead) and Mohan Kapur (from Hostages).

Hustle

Adam Sandler in Hustle, courtesy of Netflix.

Hustle is a new film starring Adam Sandler (from Happy Gilmore and Uncut Gems). He plays a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who dreams of becoming a coach and not travelling on the road as much. The team’s coach dies, and his son takes over. Instead of giving Sandler a coaching position, he sends him to Europe to look for the next big player. He finds a young man hustling ballers called Bo (played by Utah Jazz player Juancho Hernangómez). Sandler makes it his mission to get Bo into the NBA no matter what, and he’s even willing to put his career on the line.

They’re been raising Maisie on their own, until she’s kidnapped with a new Velociraptor that was reproduced asexually. Under the Banner of Heaven is an FX miniseries created by Dustin Lance Black (who won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for Milk).
