Hamilton police are investigating after someone tried to set fire to a place of worship in Hamilton on separate occasions last week.

A security video released by police captures a male suspect starting a fire outside the doors of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, at 57 Delaware Avenue near Main and Wentworth, on two successive nights.

In the first attempt, footage from Aug. 4 at 10:30 p.m. shows the suspect setting fire to a black reusable bag at the rear entrance of the building before fleeing on foot. Police say the suspect also spray painted the exterior of the facility on the same evening.

Officers responded to the same location on the next night. The security footage from Aug. 5 at 9:30 p.m. shows the suspect setting fire to a yellow shopping bag, around 9:30 p.m., at the front entrance of the building. He again flees on foot once the bag is on fire.

The suspect is described as a male with light skin and medium height and weight. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a Hockey Canada emblem, dark pants, and dark shoes.

Anyone with further information is being asked to contact police.
