Missing a wheel? Police find inflated tire and hubcap on Highway 407

If you recently got out of your vehicle in the GTA and noticed one of your wheels was missing, you’ll need to give police a call to get it back.

In a video released on social media, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt is advising drivers to “check your nuts” after the wheel of a vehicle was located on the side of Highway 407 on Tuesday.

“Here we have a perfectly inflated (tire),” says Schmidt in the video. “It’s still mounted on the wheel and hub assembly.”

Schmidt says the condition of the wheel reveals it was likely loose and wobbling on the vehicle’s axle. He suspects the tire came flying off without the driver’s knowledge while they were travelling at high speed on the highway.

“This tire bouncing down the highway, came off a vehicle sometime today,” Schmidt says. “There’s some driver right now who’s going to realize they are missing a wheel. If you want it, call me.”

Schmidt says the driver would be looking at fines of up to $50,000 due to the wheel failure.

“This is just a deadly situation waiting to happen.”

He advises any drivers who have recently had new tires installed to pay special attention and double-check how the new wheels have been mounted.
