ORONO, Maine (AP) — Samantha Hegmann-Wary, associate athletic director for compliance, will serve as acting athletic director at the University of Maine starting next month, officials said Wednesday.

The appointment was announced after the departure of Athletic Director Ken Ralph, who is headed to Division III Southwestern University.

Hegmann-Wary will lead the department during a transformative era marked by a $90 million grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation to upgrade sports facilities, said UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy.

Hegmann-Wary was hired by UMaine in 2019. She oversees the implementation of NCAA rules and regulations for all 17 varsity programs. She also serves as supervisor for several sports.
