Markham man charged with impaired driving in York officer’s death denied bail

A 23-year-old man from Markham charged with impaired driving in the death of 38-year-old York police constable Travis Gillespie was denied bail on Thursday.

Const. Gillespie was on his way to work on September 14, 2022, when he was killed in the two-vehicle crash on Major Mackenzie Drive, west of Warden Avenue, at around 6 a.m.

Police say Const. Gillespie died at the scene, while the driver of the Porsche was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. A third driver involved did not sustain any injuries.

Haoju Zhou, 23, from Markham, was charged with impaired operation causing death and dangerous operation causing death.

A spokesperson with York police confirms with CityNews that Zhou was denied bail at a court hearing in Newmarket and has been remanded in custody until November 24, 2022.

The deaths of two Innisfil officers on Tuesday mark the third and fourth Toronto area police officers to be killed in the last month.

A Toronto police officer was shot and killed during a shooting rampage that spanned the GTA in September. Days later, Const. Gillespie was killed in the early morning head-on collision in Markham.
