Video shows 1st group of kids take bowls of Halloween candy from home east of Toronto

A woman from East York was left in disbelief after her doorbell camera recorded the moments a group of children stole her entire supply of Halloween candy from her porch in broad daylight.

Jen Parker submitted the video to CityNews, which shows footage from outside her East York home in the Eglinton Avenue and Laird Drive area around 6 p.m. on Monday.

Parker explains that she was prepared to offer candy to the children in her neighbourhood but had a sign on display outside that read, “Our dog doesn’t understand Halloween. Please take one candy each, and have a fun night.”

The video shows as many as five children taking advantage of the situation, quickly grabbing all the candy before kicking bowls and throwing them onto the woman’s lawn.

One child can be heard yelling, “take the bowl, too!”

Parker, who has teenage kids of her own, says the incident happened moments after she had placed the sign outside. She heard her dog barking, so she checked her Nest doorbell camera.

“I ran downstairs, but they had run off,” Parker explained. “I was so upset because I did the same thing last year, and everyone was very respectful.”

Parker says it’s the first time she’s ever witnessed anything like this, adding that the most shocking part was how aggressive the kids were when they kicked the bowl around her front lawn, taking every last bit of candy before making off.

“My kids were so shocked, but we all agreed that it was unusual.”

Parker says she’s hoping to raise awareness for other residents in similar situations down the road, acknowledging that it is particularly challenging for dog owners whose pets may not be comfortable with ringing doorbells and constant knocking.
