17-year-old wanted in fatal shooting of teen outside Scarborough school

Toronto police obtained judicial authorization to publish the photo of a 17-year-old teenager wanted in the shooting homicide of a young man killed outside a Scarborough school this week.

Officers responded to a daytime shooting outside Woburn Collegiate Institute, in the area of Markham and Ellesmere roads, just as classes were being let out around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Police say a male teen was shot in front of the school. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was identified as 18-year-old Jefferson Peter Shardeley Guerrier of Toronto. In a letter to parents and students, Guerrier was identified as a former student at Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute.

Another victim, a 15-year-old boy, walked into a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a trauma centre and is now in stable condition. Woburn Collegiate was in lockdown following the shooting, but students were allowed to exit the school with the assistance of officers.

On Wednesday, police released a suspect image of the teen wanted for second-degree murder.

Under the province’s Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), police say the judicial authorization to keep the victim’s photo circulating was set to expire on Nov. 7 or when the suspect is arrested, whichever comes first.

“Following the expiration, the photograph and his name can no longer be published or broadcasted under the Youth Criminal Justice Act provisions,” Toronto police noted in a news release.

Police considered the youth armed and dangerous and urged public members not to approach him. It’s unclear if he is a current or former student at any of the surrounding schools.
