A man arrested in an unprovoked attack that killed an 89-year-old woman in downtown Toronto on Friday is now facing a manslaughter charge.

Police were called to Yonge and King streets just after 11:30 a.m. for reports of an assault outside a restaurant.

Investigators said the woman was walking on the sidewalk when a man pushed her to the ground. She suffered injuries to her head and face and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man fled the scene, but police took him into custody a short time later.

On Saturday, police charged 37-year-old Ryan Cunneen with aggravated assault and mischief under $5,000. In an update on Tuesday, police said the charge has been upgraded to manslaughter.

Police have not released the woman’s name at this point as they continue to work to notify her family.
