A 38-year-old construction worker is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash involving an alleged impaired driver in North York.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes of Allen Road, south of Lawrence Avenue, around 12:45 a.m.

Police say a worker was doing road maintenance on the left shoulder of the roadway in a designated construction zone when he was struck by a southbound SUV. The vehicle then struck a mound of dirt and flipped over.

The construction worker was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV, 35-year-old Nelson Jacob-Louis of Toronto, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with impaired driving, impaired driving causing bodily harm and carrying a concealed weapon. Police say he did not sustain any injuries.

Southbound Allen was closed at Lawrence for the investigation but lanes reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
