Boy, 15, seriously injured trying to climb moving subway train at Warden Station

Police said the 16-year-old was attempting to get on top of the subway train approaching Warden subway station when he hit his head.

A 15-year-old boy suffered “catastrophic” head injuries after he attempted to climb on top of a subway train in Scarborough, according to police.

Toronto police were notified of an incident at TTC’s Warden Station around 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

Investigators said there were reports of a boy trying to climb on top of a moving subway train as it was approaching the station.

“We do know that while the 15-year-old was outside the train car, he struck his head on something,” says Toronto police Duty Insp. Michael Hayles. “I can imagine that due to the nature of the injury, the train was going at a high enough speed that anything that struck any part of your body would become significantly injured.”

Hayles said bystanders tended to the boy before paramedics arrived. He was rushed to a trauma centre with critical head injuries but is now in stable condition.

Police tell CityNews the boy had no pulse when emergency crews arrived and needed to be revived through CPR. The victim will undergo a CT scan at the hospital.

The boy was with his girlfriend and sister at the time of the incident. Police are still trying determine why he decided to climb on top of the moving train. There is no indication the boy was trying to flee from anyone.

Police say further information will be released once investigators gather more details. It’s unclear if the youth will be charged.
