Dozens of vehicles damaged after dump truck spills chunks of concrete on Gardiner Expressway

Lanes were closed Wednesday morning after debris fell from a truck onto the westbound Gardiner.

Police are looking for a dump truck they say is responsible for spilling debris onto the Gardiner Expressway in Etobicoke during the Wednesday morning commute and damaging several vehicles.

The truck lost part of its load around 6:30 a.m. and dropped chunks of concrete onto the westbound Gardiner between Park Lawn Road and Islington Avenue.

Police confirmed to CityNews that several vehicles were damaged after running over bits of concrete on the highway. No injuries have been reported.

CityNews 680 traffic reporter Jordan Kerr was over the scene in a helicopter and said there were dozens of stalled vehicles pulled over in the area after they struck some of the scattered debris.

“There’s a huge spill,” said Kerr. “There are cars off to the shoulder all over the place.”

Angela sent CityNews dash cam video of her car striking one of the concrete chunks (see above). She says she wasn’t hurt but her car was damaged.

“I tried to swerve out of the way of the two cars that were already stopped,” she says. “I didn’t stop in time and I hit the rock.”

Another driver says his airbag deployed after his vehicle struck a large concrete bit.

“Suddenly we just saw the concrete, there was a huge bump in the car and the airbag came out,” says Taranpreet Singh. “It was so scary.”

The two right westbound lanes were blocked off near Park Lawn for most of the morning. Police were on scene blocking several lanes in an effort to prevent other vehicles from hitting concrete.

All lanes reopened around 11:30 a.m.

The dump truck accused of spilling its load was last seen travelling northbound on Highway 427. There is no word on any charges.
