Man critically injured after crashing car into Scarborough house

A 26-year-old man was critically injured after crashing his vehicle into a home in Scarborough, leading to the carport collapsing.

Police say just before 5 a.m. Friday, a Nissan Sentra travelling “at a high rate of speed” failed to stop at the intersection of Ellesmere Road and Scarborough Golf Club Road. The driver continued northbound before crashing into the carport of a home at 24 Portico Drive, resulting in its collapse.

The driver was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.

Occupants of the home were not injured in the crash but had to evacuate due to structural and environmental concerns.

“It was a disaster scene when I came out,” homeowner Brian Elvidge tells CityNews. “I came out through the side door and everything looked intact until I opened the door and there wasn’t an inch that wasn’t covered with glass or debris.”

Elvidge says this isn’t the first time someone has crashed into the house, noting that a few years back a drunk driver in a pickup ended up on his front lawn.

“I can’t really speak to the statistics surrounding that but it does seem pretty strange to have your house struck by two speeding vehicles in the lifetime of any house.”

The Toronto Police Service said that two other homes on Portico Drive were evacuated due to the collision. No other injuries were reported.
