A boy has died, and his father, who was behind the wheel, is fighting for his life in hospital following a single-vehicle rollover crash on the westbound QEW at Bronte Road.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said officers were called to the area at around 2 a.m. on Monday. The vehicle had three occupants, with the child suffering critical injuries.
A police spokesperson confirmed with 680 NewsRadio that the child, a nine-year-old boy, later died in hospital. The 38-year-old driver was initially treated for minor injuries but is now in hospital in critical condition.
OPP Const. Timothy Dunnah tells CityNews that the driver is the boy’s father, and the group was returning from a fishing trip.
Dunnah said the third occupant of the vehicle, a 28-year-old man, is related to the father and the boy and was uninjured. They had been on the road for several hours before the single-vehicle crash.
The family is from Hamilton, Dunnah also confirmed. Provincial police say no charges have been laid in the crash.

Dunnah told CityNews that the driver fell asleep, and the pickup truck wandered off the highway and flipped over several times before ending up in a ditch.
Provincial police told 680 NewsRadio it appears the driver and the boy were not wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred, but the other passenger was wearing it. Police also said the boy was ejected from the truck as a result of the collision.
CityNews confirmed that an off-duty nurse was the first person on the scene and performed life-saving measures on the boy.
The westbound QEW near Bronte Road was closed for six hours and reopened at 5:30 a.m.
