York Region police officer facing more than two dozen charges

A member of the York Regional Police Force is facing more than two dozen charges following an investigation by the Professional Standards Bureau.

Police officials say Cst. Guangnan (Garry) Sun is facing 23 counts of unauthorized use of a computer, two counts of breach of trust by a public officer and one of obstructing justice.

A police spokesperson tells CityNews that what led to the charges is evidentiary in nature and since the matter is now before the courts, “we won’t be releasing anything beyond what is stated in the release.”

Police say Sun was released from custody without conditions and he is scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on Feb. 18.

Sun has been with the force since August 2022, originally working out of 5 District before moving to the Community Resource Centre on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill.

Officials say anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Professional Standards Bureau.

The Bureau investigates public complaints as directed by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) and conducts internal investigations as directed by the Chief of Police, including reviewing incidents that require the involvement of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.
