A large sinkhole at the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village disrupted traffic at the busy intersection while construction crews worked on a repair.
Police initially released an alert about a hazard in the area at approximately 10 a.m. on Saturday. When contacted by CityNews, a spokesperson for the City of Toronto said repairs are expected to be completed at some point on Monday.
“The cause is expected to be a broken watermain. The watermain is more than a century old, and watermain breaks happen more frequently during the winter months,” the city said.
“Crews have been working diligently to repair the watermain and reinstate the road as quickly and safely as possible, with repairs expected to be completed [Monday]. Until then, there will be one northbound and one southbound lane closure to accommodate the work.”
The TTC has implemented a detour for buses travelling along the eastbound 94 route due to the construction.

Photos from the scene show a sinkhole measuring approximately two to four metres wide in the northwest corner of the intersection.
Wellesley Street is closed in both directions, but northbound and southbound traffic continues to flow along Church Street.
“We understand this is challenging for people who live and work in the area, and we thank those impacted for their patience,” the city said.
