Woman dies after car plunges into water at Ashbridges Bay

A woman died in hospital after a car ended up in the chilly waters of Ashbridges Bay on Sunday.

Police and Toronto Fire crews were called to the east-end park located near Lake Shore Boulevard and Woodbine Avenue around 9:30 p.m. following reports at least two people were trapped in the vehicle.

Paramedics later confirmed to CityNews that six people in total had been taken to hospital and that one of them, a woman, was in critical condition. The remaining five people — four police officers and a male driver — were said to have serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In an update from police on Monday, authorities confirmed that the woman had died.

“We received a call for a vehicle that had gone into the water and was quickly submerging,” said Const. Viktor Sarudi. “The adult male driver was out of the vehicle; however, there was still a female passenger inside the car.”

Police said the four officers were taken to hospital, and they were treated for exposure to the elements. They have since been released.

“Sadly, the female passenger was pronounced deceased [Monday] morning.”

Investigators tell 680 NewsRadio that two other vehicles were parked in the area when one car drove onto the ice and started sinking.

Officers continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

“We’re asking if there are any witnesses or anyone with information to contact 55 Division,” said Sarudi.
