Man, 76, dead after Oshawa house fire, investigation ongoing

An elderly man has died after a house fire broke out in Oshawa on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to a residence at Centre Street and Gibb Street at around 8 p.m.

When fire crews arrived, they reported “visible smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the home.”

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Const. Nicholas Gluckstein told reporters on Tuesday that a 76-year-old man was located inside on the second floor and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later died of his injuries.

The victim lived alone, and no other residents were found inside or around the house during the fire, Gluckstein said.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified, and the investigation is ongoing. Police noted that the fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
