NDP MP Gazan tables bill to end residential school denialism

By Eddie Huband

Federal MP for Winnipeg Centre has reintroduced legislation in Ottawa that would criminalize the promotion of hatred through residential school denialism.

In a statement, Gazan said action against rising anti-Indigenous hate was needed now more than ever.

“I dedicate this bill to all residential school survivors and their families, who have endured unimaginable pain in their subjection to genocide through the residential school system,” Gazan said.

“They deserve protection from racist disinformation and the incitement of hate through genocide denialism,” she added.

Gazan’s bill would make it illegal to promote hatred against Indigenous peoples by condoning, denying, downplaying or justifying the Indian residential school system.
