19-year-old dead, 3 suspects arrested after overnight police shooting in Mississauga: SIU

A 19-year-old man is dead after he was shot by a Toronto police officer overnight in Mississauga during a gun investigation, officials say.
Initially, Ontario’s police watchdog said the fatal shooting stemmed from a stolen vehicle investigation. However, in an update, police told CityNews the vehicle in question was not stolen.
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) spokesperson Monica Hudon confirmed late Thursday that Toronto police officers were tracking a Mercedes in connection with a firearms investigation in the area of Council Ring Road and The Collegeway, near Winston Churchill Boulevard, around 12:22 a.m. on Thursday when the shooting happened.
Hudon said there was an interaction, and three unmarked police vehicles became involved in a collision with the driver of the Mercedes, which was occupied by four suspects. One male, confirmed as the driver, was shot and critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“One officer discharged a firearm, and there is no evidence of other gunfire,” Hudon said, later noting that two firearms were discovered at the scene.
3 suspects taken into custody, officer suffers minor injuries
Three suspects who were in the vehicle were taken into custody at the scene. A second male was transported to hospital with minor injuries. Investigators say no suspects are outstanding.
A Toronto police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a collision connected to the incident. It’s unclear if the injured officer was the one involved in the shooting.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the investigation in Mississauga was not connected to the suspects allegedly behind the U.S. Consulate shooting in Toronto.
“Our police officers will go where their criminal investigations lead them. That is an investigation that started in Toronto and concluded in Peel,” Demkiw said. “The injured officer received some treatment and is doing well.”
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
