Diesel prices set to rise 10 cents in GTA

Analyst at En-Pro say gas prices in the GTA are set to jump at midnight, while diesel is also expected to skyrocket.

Diesel prices will jump by 10 cents per litre at midnight on Thursday across the GTA.

Gas prices are also set to increase by 3 cents, but En-Pro Chief Petroleum Analyst Roger McKnight says diesel is the fuel that “powers the economic engine.”

High prices of diesel lead to increased inflation which in turn pushes interest rates up. So while gas prices appear high, he says the “real problem is diesel.”

He adds that the ongoing geopolitical turmoil involving the Strait of Hormuz, brought about by the war in Iran, has not only tightened the global shipping supply of diesel but also shortened refining capacity.

“We are also entering into refinery maintenance season which will cut back on diesel supply as we enter winter,” he says.

Along with Toronto and the GTA, Montreal will also see a 10 cent jump in diesel prices and Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary will see an 11 cent per litre increase. Halifax diesel prices will be up by 14 cents whereas Vancouver will see the highest spike of 15 cents per litre.
