Music Monday: Recognizing the role music plays in school

Music Monday is a day focused on highlighting the importance of music and education. On May 1st schools from across the country will take part in singing. This includes 800 schools and roughly 150,000 thousand kids.
The day was launched in 2005 by The Coalitions for Music Education in Canada.
Every year, students, teachers and artists host events worldwide and sing together.
“Today we are talking about Music Monday and how music is important in our lives and how that music could be joyful and sometimes sad,” says Maliya, a student at Harry Bowes Public School in Stoufville, Ontario.
Natalie, another student who is part of the school’s choirs says, “Music makes me feel happy, sometimes sad, grateful because you can sing along with other people. You get to make other people happy by doing it.”
Students across the nation will sing the song “Music is Our Medicine” written by Mimi O’Bonsawin and Nicholas Ma.
The song is the official anthem of this year’s celebrations.
Singer/songwriter, Mimi O’Bonsawin, was at Harry Bowes Public School singing with the choir, said, “For me music is my work, but I know for everybody music is very healing, so I think that’s what it’s all about.”
