Deer still trapped in Scarborough plaza

By News Staff

An abandoned and overgrown Scarborough plaza is serving as a makeshift enclosure for a family of deer that became trapped there on Tuesday night.

Two deer were reportedly crossing the street at Eglinton Avenue and Ionview Road when one of them was hit by a car and injured.

On Thursday morning, George Katsuras – the driver of that car – told CityNews that the deer “jumped on the road, slipped on the pavement and then smashed into the car”.

The deer was stunned for a few minutes and then got up and made its way into the plaza along with the other deer that darted across the street earlier.

Soon after, a fawn was born to one of the deer and baby made three.

After CityNews contacted Toronto Animal Services, they attended the scene on Wednesday afternoon. However, the property manager refused to let staff on site.

When Toronto Wildlife Centre staff visited however, they were granted access. They discovered that mom and baby were unharmed. The injured deer is male.

It was decided that the family should be left in the enclosure for the night in hopes that the mother would lead the baby to safety.

Neither Toronto Animal Services nor the Toronto Wildlife Centre has the space to care for an injured deer.

The Toronto Zoo does have the space and facilities, but the issue is further complicated by the fact that zoo staff are currently on strike.

As of Thursday morning, all three deer are still in the enclosure.
