GO train service for thousands of commuters who use the Milton line is back to normal this morning, after a massive industrial fire interrupted the evening commute.

Firefighters were called to a battery recycling plant near Dixie Road and Dundas Street just before 4 p.m. Wednesday. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky, but the fire has since been brought under control.

The surrounding businesses were evacuated and police asked residents in the area to close their windows as they didn’t know exactly what was burning.

Police said they were working with fire services to determine if there were any air quality issues.

The cause of the fire is not yet know and no injuries were reported.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office will be investigating.

The Dixie GO station re-opened for buses, however, trains were not running along the Milton line due to the fire. GO train service resumed on Thursday morning.
