Director Sofia Coppola married the father of her two young daughters in her great-grandfather’s hometown in southern Italy Saturday.
Coppola, 40, exchanged vows with Thomas Mars, the lead singer of the French band Phoenix. This is her second marriage. She divorced filmmaker Spike Jonze in 2003.
Her famous father, The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, walked her down the aisle in the centre of Bernalda, near the Gulf of Taranto and the UNESCO-recognized troglodyte settlement of Matera. The town mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi, performed the ceremony.
“If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn’t have done it here,” Chiruzzi told the Associated Press. “(They) chose to do it here because it’s here – it’s here that is beautiful.”
Johnny Depp was reportedly in attendance.
Coppola won an Academy Award for best original screenplay in 2003 for her film Lost in Translation. That picture also earned her a best director nomination – she was the third woman ever to be nominated in that category.
