U of T teaching assistants take to the picket lines at 3 campuses

More than 6,000 teaching assistants (TAs) at the University of Toronto went on strike after all.

The negotiators from CUPE local 3902 had reached a tentative deal, around 4 a.m. Friday morning, following a marathon round of talks.

But late Friday afternoon, 90 per cent of the TAs who came to a meeting to learn about that deal voted it down.

Union members spent the weekend creating signs at the CUPE local 3902 headquarters.

Picket lines, which are set up around the downtown, Mississauga and Scarborough campuses, started at 9 a.m. on Monday.

Peel police have already tweeted about some delays. This strike will effectively shut down tutorials and labs.

Non-student contract teaching staff at the university have reached a tentative deal. Members will decide whether to send that deal to a ratification vote at a meeting on Monday.

The university has set up an information site for updates on strike activity.

Meanwhile, the union representing TAs and other teaching staff at York University had its final day of bargaining on Sunday.

Members will vote on a tentative deal on Monday evening.
