A memorial to commemorate the lives of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan was unveiled in Woodstock on Saturday.
Hundreds were in attendance at the Woodstock Ontario Cenotaph as 158 flags flew around the memorial.
On each flag was written a name of a Canadian serviceperson killed in Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan War Memorial was unveiled on the anniversary of the death of Pte. Tyler William Todd, who was killed in 2010 by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol outside Kandahar City.
Todd was born in Bright, Ont. and went to school in Woodstock.
The idea for the memorial was conceived by two of Pte. Todd’s friends – Kevin DeClark and Jeremy MacKnott and has been a year in the making.
“It was amazing to see the community pull together and honour our troops,” MacKnott told those in attendance. “Today was an emotional roller coaster being the fifth anniversary of Ty’s death but I know we made him smile…that’s why the sun came out. I also know we have made a place to honour and morn those who served and those who have fallen.”
The battle cross statue, which was unveiled during the ceremony, shows a soldier’s rifle, helmet and pair of boots.
