It’s going to cost a little more to send a letter.
Canada Post announced Thursday that it is going to raise the price of domestic postage from 85 cents to 90 on Jan. 11, 2016.
“We need to do everything we can to secure the future of the business,” Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton told the Toronto Star. “We saw in 2015 some of the steepest declines in mail volumes.”
According to Hamilton, Canada Post handled only 3.6 billion letters in 2014. They handled 5 billion in 2006. Volume has dropped 8.4% in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same period last year, he said.
Sending letters to other countries will increase as well. Stamps to the United States will jump from $1.20 to $1.25, and International stamps will go up from $2.50 to $2.60.
Canada Post increased the price of stamps from 63 cents to 85 cents in March 2014. At that time they also introduced a policy where individual stamps could be purchased for $1. Individual stamps will remain at $1 apiece, and people can also purchase permanent stamps in booklets that will be accepted next year.
Canada Post estimates that the average household purchases less than two stamps a month.
