Police say street racing to blame for fatal Brampton crash that killed four

Peel Regional Police say the driver of a Trans Am involved in a violent, fatal crash last week in Brampton that killed four people, was street racing.

Investigators say video collected from the area shows the Trans Am driven by Calisto Mendonca and another car were travelling westbound on Bovaird Drive “at an extremely high rate of speed” shortly before the crash on Thanksgiving Monday night.

Police say as the two cars encountered other traffic, Mendonca abruptly changed lanes, at which point he lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking the car driven by Brian McGinnis. The violent impact resulted in both cars becoming engulfed in flames.

McGinnis, his girlfriend Lauren Bouchard and her sister Michelle Bouchard, along with Mendonca were pronounced dead on scene.

“It is very likely that the other driver involved is aware of this collision,” Staff Sgt. Gary Carty said in a statement. “Our investigators would like to speak with that driver.”

Police would also like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed or has video footage of the Trans Am and the second, unidentified car, prior to the crash.
