Teen charged in thwarted Oakwood Collegiate attack back in court next year

The teenager charged in a thwarted attack at Oakwood Collegiate Institute will be back in court next year.

A lawyer for the teen, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was in court on Tuesday.

The teen will appear in community youth court, a mental health court for young people, on Jan. 16, 2017.

The teen was arrested earlier this month, charged with uttering threats of bodily harm and uttering threats of death. After his arrest, the teen was taken to a hospital. It’s not clear if the teen is still in hospital.

Planned school attack stopped: police

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, Toronto police took a 17-year-old teen into custody.

They had become aware of a threat against Oakwood Collegiate five days earlier, on Dec. 1. Acting on a tip, Toronto police investigated an online post that said there would be an attack at the school on the 27th anniversary of the massacre at Ecole Polytechnique. The post was made from a Toronto District School Board computer, police said.

The Ecole Polytechnique shooting left 14 women and their killer dead. The shooter explicitly blamed feminism for his problems, and separated the men from the women before opening fire. Despite referencing shooter Marc Lepine in the blog post, Toronto police Det. Len Nicholson said the threats did not target a specific gender and a motive is still unclear.

Police say they identified the teen who made the post and executed a search warrant at his home early on Dec. 6. Police say they seized a machete, a hatchet, two swords, four knives and arrows.

I got a machete and a hatchet in the basement, a coat I can hide them in, and sunglasses. I’ll show the people at my school what “terror” really looks like. They think “terror” is some middle-eastern radical with C4 strapped across his body and a detonator in his hand. No. That isn’t terror. No. Terror is a white male, walking into a school with a machete and a hatchet, running through the place and hacking people into mince meat and busting down doors because you KNOW they’re hiding in their classrooms like sheep ready for slaughter. Then the school resource officers will gun me down and that’ll be the end of it. I’ll be like Marc Lépine, who only lived for 5 or 6 minutes.”
