1 dead in head-on crash on Hwy. 401 in Bowmanville

Ontario provincial police (OPP) have identified the victim in a fatal crash on Hwy. 401 on Saturday morning.

38-year-old Jacob Knowlton from Trenton, Ont. was killed in a collision near Liberty Street in Bowmanville just after 3 a.m.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police responded to a call for a dark coloured SUV travelling westbound in an eastbound lane at highway speeds.

The SUV collided head-on with a transport truck and the driver was killed as a result. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

All lanes of Highway 401 were closed between Liberty street and Bennet Road for the investigation and cleanup, but have since reopened.
