Metric set to share ‘Fantasies’ with hometown crowd

Music festival season is finally here. This weekend marks the highly anticipated return of Toronto’s favourite music festival — Field Trip. Headlining the first of two nights is hometown success story Metric.

“This year, as a special kind of moment for Toronto, we are performing Fantasies, our album from 2009, in it’s entirety,” lead singer Emily Haines told CityNews. “We’ve never done this before. We are currently deep in rehearsals and it’s been a time-travelling experience to go back and listen to this record.

“We are really excited to go back and create the feelings we had when we recorded this record. We are encouraging people who come to the show to think about what has changed in their lives since this album came out, how they feel about those changes, and life in general.”

It will be a busy summer for the Juno-Award winning band as it was just announced that they will be going on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, and they recently finished recording a new album.

“There is a new Metric record brewing and we will have lots to announce about that soon,” Haines said. “The tour is a perfect lead-up to our new album because we can play some new jams and play arenas again. We recorded 99 per cent of the album in our studio here in Toronto, which is also where where we helped record the Beaches’ album.”

Haines helped produce and mentor the Toronto band, which won a Juno Award in March.

“It’s really exciting to see their success,” she said. “I’ve never really focused on my gender as my point of what I am doing. In fact, I have done the opposite approach.

“However, there were a lot of things I felt I had to just suck it up and just ignore and overcome and it was really exciting to work with the next generation of girls who are just completely free of that stuff. They can just write and produce and get to work and everyone is over the mind-blowing fact that a woman is doing it.”
