Ontario building new hospital in Mississauga, expanding facility in Toronto

The province is touting a new multi-billion dollar investment to build a new, state-of-the-art hospital in Mississauga and expand another one in Toronto – both facilities are part of Trillium Health Partners.

Over the next two decades, the demand for health care at Trillium is expected to increase nearly seven times more than than the average Ontario hospital due to Peel and Etobicoke’s growing populations.

As part of the provincial government’s plan to address this boom, Premier Doug Ford is pledging to add more than 600 new hospital beds and expand services to not only improve access to care, but to reduce wait times for patients in Peel Region, Etobicoke and any surrounding communities.

“This pandemic has reminded us of the importance of having ready access to hospital beds when they’re needed most. Our government will never waver in our efforts to protect our progress by delivering modern hospitals with more beds to meet the needs of our growing communities today and for generations to come,” Ford added.

The new Mississauga hospital site is expected to be home to one of the largest emergency departments in Ontario — in addition to having more operating rooms and beds.

The redevelopment plans also include a new inpatient care tower at the Queensway Health Centre to centralize continuing care and rehabilitation services for patients, while also adding over 150 new beds.

“Our government made a commitment to end hallway health care and build a better, connected health care system centered on the needs of patients.  As we celebrate Trillium Health Partners’ 10-year anniversary, this new investment to support THP’s redevelopment is just one way we are delivering on that commitment,” said Minister of Health Christine Elliott.

Both the Mississauga and Queensway hospitals will receive more than $27-million in extra operational funding this fiscal year.

Ford said Wednesday’s announcement is part of his government’s overall plan to spend $30-billion over 10 years on increasing hospital capacity.
