Beacher Cafe serving Beaches residents for over 30 years

Stella Acquisto learns why The Beacher Cafe is loved by the community.

The Beaches residents have been heading to the Beacher Cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner for over 30 years.

The neighbourhood joint, which first opened its doors in 1986, is open seven days a week and quickly became a stable in the community.

“I’ve been coming to this restaurant for over easily over 30 years,” said Linda Heino, a nearby resident.

“These guys have been bringing me here since I was a young boy,” said another regular Evan Stothers, referring to his parents. “I got the all day breakfast today, but I like the burger as well it’s definitely a neighbourhood classic for sure.”

Peter Martineau took over the spot back in 1999, after being owned by two separate owners.

“I was in town just visiting my sister. I did a four year stint working overseas and she asked me to come see this restaurant and we came and looked and a few months later I ended up buying it,” Martineau told CityNews.

The restaurant is also where he met Kumiko, who was on a working visa from Japan. “She came in, sat down at table 61. Make a long story short, two children later, they are out of the house, we’re empty nesters and we’re still running the restaurant,” shared Martineau.

Kumiko said she’s in the restaurant most days, but she doesn’t mind it because the customers feel like family.

“Right now, I know like four generations,” said Kumiko, adding, “and now they come to work at The Beacher.”
