Man tried to jump fence after stealing bank deposit but stopped by off-duty officer: York police

Police have arrested a 35-year-old Toronto man who allegedly robbed a person who was depositing money at a bank and then tried to flee by jumping over a fence in Markham.

York Regional Police investigators say just before 3 p.m. on Aug. 25, a person was depositing a large sum of money at a bank in the area of Woodbine Avenue and 16th Avenue, when the suspect approached saying he had a gun and demanded the cash, as well as the person’s watch, cellphone and wallet.

The suspect allegedly grabbed the bag with the money inside and fled north on Woodbine.

Police say the victim and a witness then followed the suspect in a vehicle when the suspect attempted to jump over a fence, but was stopped by an off-duty York Regional Police officer who arrested him.

Investigators believe this was a targeted incident and the money has since been returned.

No injuries were reported.

Police have charged Syed Hofioni with robbery.
