Police locate driver after SUV fatally struck man sleeping on sidewalk in downtown Toronto

Toronto police say a man laying on the sidewalk was hit and killed by an SUV that fled the scene. Brandon Rowe gets an update from police and reaction from local residents.

Police have found a driver after a man was struck and killed by a vehicle while sleeping on the sidewalk in downtown Toronto on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Wellington Street East and Scott Street, just east of Yonge Street, around 6:45 a.m. after getting reports a person was struck by a vehicle.

A 57-year-old man was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe an SUV was travelling north on Scott when it mounted a curb on the east side of the street and struck a pedestrian who was sleeping on the sidewalk.

The SUV did not stop and the victim was dragged a short distance.

In an update on Tuesday night, investigators said police located the driver and the vehicle involved with the assistance of the public.

No charges have been laid, though the investigation continues.

Toronto police Insp. Jeff Bangild said officers will continue to review video surveillance from the area to determine what caused the crash.

He says they have not ruled out the possibility that the driver was unaware they struck someone.
