Invited back to Carnegie Hall: Award-winning vocalist from Opaskwayak Cree Nation

Though it may have felt like a dream — or an Island Dream — being invited back to Carnegie Hall is Rhonda Head’s reality.

The award-winning Mezzo-Soprano vocalist from Opaskwayak Cree Nation has won over 40 awards and already performed at New York’s prestigious concert venue in Midtown Manhattan three times. The most recent performance, took place last year alongside the Flin Flon choir.

“This trip and opportunity is going to be so life changing for the youth,” said Head. “And be such a incredible experience.”

They are now set to perform Handel’s Messiah on Dec.1st.

“We spoke at the after party (last year) and he told me he was so exited the Indigenous youth came,” explained Head. “And he extended the invitation to bring them next year.”

Head added that when she got the invitation to return, she didn’t expect it to happen so fast.

Once she got the confirmation email, she burst into tears, she said — instantly taking steps to put together the most qualified group to perform.

“I wasn’t going to take any kid who wanted to go for a trip to New York,” explained the classical singer/songwriter. “They all had to show me they were interested in singing.”

“They all auditioned for me,” she added. “So that’s how they got chosen to attend this.”

The Manitoba Indigenous youth taking part are between the ages of 10-13.

Head believes this will be a life changing experience for them.

She started singing classical music years ago, saying that at the time there wasnt anyone to mentor her in that style of music.

Now she’s able to be the mentor to this group of youth, and inspire the next generation.

“I truly believe they are stars in the making,” said Head. “It’s only going to encourage them to continue on and strive to maybe you know they’ll be doing solo shows at Carnegie Hall.”

“Anything is possible.”

To help raise funds for the opportunity, they are holding a fundraiser event at Hermanos Restaurant & Wine Bar on Sunday.
