Third power outage plagues Minto condominiums residents

By News Staff

Residents of The Minto Quantum 2 North condos at Yonge and Eglinton are dealing with the third extended power outage in their buildings since December.

Resident Jordan Fenton left his unit at 2191 Yonge St. after power went out early Friday morning. He said the last outage happened in August due to a watermain break that flooded the building’s hydro vault. It kept him away from home for five days.

“It’s really frustrating, communication has been really bad, they don’t keep us up to date with what’s happening,” Fenton said. “You would think by now they have some sort of contingency plan.”

A letter from Quantum 2 North management says this outage was also caused by a watermain break. Hot water will not run during the blackout.

“Please be informed due to a water main break on Yonge & Eglinton water has penetrated into the transformer room and caused an electrical block out,” the letter read.

The building’s management company is blaming the city for infrastructure issues, according to one resident. Toronto Hydro says the problem belongs to building management.

Several residents say they have been told to expect power to return on Monday.

An average of 1,600 watermain breaks happen in Toronto annually, according to the city.
